Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

 

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) was launched on 1st April 2022. It aims to support homeowners who are switching their heating from fossil fuels such as gas, oil and LPG to a heat pump.

 

The Boiler Upgrade scheme is available to homes and smaller non-domestic properties and provides grants of £7,500 towards the installation of air source heat pumps.

How can I get the grant?

​

To access the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) Grant you installer must be MCS registered and also registered with the boiler upgrade scheme. Renew East Ltd are MCS registered heat pump installers and have also created an account with BUS. This enables us to offer the £7500 BUS grant.

Who is eligible?

​

  • Existing homes and small non-domestic properties in England and Wales are eligible up to 45kW.

  • Your property will need a valid energy performance certificate (EPC) that is less than 10 years old, with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity call insulation. If your property is listed there can be exemptions from this requirement. EPC’s are not required for new build properties.

  • Heat pumps are eligible for properties either on or off the gas grid.

  • The commissioning date of your low carbon heating system must be on or after 1st April 2022.

  • You must be fully replacing an existing fossil fuel system such as oil, lpg, gas or direct electric.

  • Funding is NOT available for the replacement of existing low carbon heat systems.

  • New build homes and social housing are NOT eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. An exception to this is if the new build property is a self-build (customer built) property owned by the self-builder.

 

How to apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) Grant

 

Stage 1 – Pre-Installation

  1. You contact us and arrange for a survey.

  2. We then visit to measure and assess your property and requirements.

  3. We issue a quotation for the works.

  4. Quotation is accepted and deposit paid.

  5. We'll check you are eligible and then apply for a voucher. As part of this process, we'll also have to supply information about the technology type, your postcode and contact details.

  6. Ofgem will then contact you for to confirm your consent for us to request a grant voucher.

  7. Ofgem will assess the application and once satisfied a voucher will be issued us. 

 

Stage 2 – Post installation

 

 1. Once a voucher has been issued we will then install and commission your heat pump system.

2. After the installation has been completed, we will then provide evidence of the installation to redeem the voucher. Ofgem will assess the redemption voucher.

3. Ofgem will pay the grant to us. 

4. Final step is that pay us the remaining balance of the invoice e.g. total price minus £5,000 (if air source heat pump) or £6,000 (if ground source heat pump.)
